Crews have since removed tens of thousands of tons wreckage from the Patapsco River and fully reopened the shipping channel in June. But there’s more activity on the horizon. In the coming months, state officials will identify the builder of the new span, expected to cost about $1.7 billion and open by October 2028, and begin the demolition of remaining bridge structures.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if the federal government will fully fund the new bridge or if the state will pay for a portion. Regardless, some of that money is expected to be recouped from insurance and third-party claims.
