Ron Howard, 70, said during an interview with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival that politics wasn’t discussed that often while the move was being made.

“Well, we didn’t talk a lot of politics when we were making the movie because I was interested in his upbringing and that survival tale. That’s what we mostly focused on,” Howard said, adding “based on the conversations that we had during that time, I just have to say I’m very surprised and disappointed by much of the rhetoric that I’m reading and hearing. People do change, and I assume that’s the case. Well, it’s on record.

Howard said at that time, in 2020, Vance “was not involved in politics or claimed to be particularly interested. So that was then. I think the important thing is to recognize what’s going on today and to vote.”

One year later, Vance ran for the Ohio U.S. Senate seat vacated by Rob Portman. After being endorsed by Donald Trump, he went on to win the 2022 election, defeating Tim Ryan.

In another interview with Variety in Toronto, Howard added he’s “been surprised and concerned by a lot of the rhetoric” from the Trump-Vance campaign.

“There’s no version of me voting for Donald Trump to be president again, whoever the vice president was,” he said.

Glenn Close who starred in the movie as Vance’s grandmother spoke to Variety last month during the premiere of her movie “The Deliverance” and slammed Vance for flip-flopping on Trump.

“You only hope that people in our government have a moral backbone and that they don’t say one thing and then say something that’s 150 degrees different,” she said.

Judge rules Trump campaign cannot use classic Isaac Hayes song without license https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/09/03/judge-rules-trump-campaign-cannot-use-classic-isaac-hayes-song-without-license/ Wed, 04 Sep 2024 00:00:40 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10437783 Former President Donald Trump is facing another roadblock when it comes to what songs he can and can’t use during his presidential campaign.

The estate of the late R&B singer and songwriter Isaac Hayes recently ordered Trump and his campaign to stop using the song “Hold On, I’m Coming.”

An emergency preliminary injunction alleges the former president doesn’t have approval to play the song at events.

The song was released in 1966, co-written by Hayes and David Porter and performed by Sam Moore and Dave Prater, also professionally known as Sam & Dave.

“Mr. Trump and the Trump Campaign has unlawfully publicly performed the Copyrighted Work at all rallies and public appearances starting in 2020,” according to court documents. “A cease-and-desist letter was sent that year to the Trump campaign by non-parties Universal Music Group and Warner Chappell Music … Despite the cease-and-desist letter, Mr. Trump and the Trump Campaign have unlawfully used the Copyrighted Work in violation of several provisions.

According to CNN, Judge Thomas Thrash Jr. said in court “I do order Trump and his campaign to not use the song without proper license.”

However, the judge denied a motion to force the Trump campaign to take down any previously recorded uses of the song.

Ronald Coleman, an attorney for Donald Trump, said during a news conference “that out of consideration for the sentiments of the Hayes family and in order to avoid further litigation” the song will no longer be played.

The son of Isaac Hayes, Isaac Hayes III, stated after the hearing that he wants the decision by the judge “to serve as an opportunity for other artists to come forward that don’t want their music used by Donald Trump or other political entities, and continue to fight for music artists rights and copyright.”

“Specifically, and ironically, Trump has spent a lifetime and well over 60 years protecting, expanding and building the Trump name goodwill and brand that his father left him, but refuses to honor, respect and pay for the name, brand, goodwill, intellectual property and business that was left to the Hayes family by their father,” the emergency injunction states.

Isaac Hayes III posted a letter on X from BMI dated June 5, 2024, stating Donald Trump never had a valid license to use the song.

“Donald Trump for President has been claiming they had a valid @BMI license to play ‘Hold On, I’m Coming’ for weeks. FALSE,” the post reads. “Donald Trump for President has not had valid license for nealy 100 days, and @realDonaldTrump has NEVER had a license. Not to mention the numerous uses before Nov. 30th, 2022.”

Other artists have taken issue with the Trump campaign using their music including Celine Dion and Foo Fighters, but have not gone to court over the complaints.

Hayes died in 2008 at age 65 after suffering a stroke.

Woman charged after trying to pet Bengal tiger at New Jersey zoo https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/27/woman-charged-after-trying-to-pet-bengal-tiger-at-new-jersey-zoo/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 22:30:21 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10272709 A woman caught on video trying to pet a Bengal tiger at a New Jersey zoo has been identified and charged.

The Bridgeton Police Department said 24-year-old Zyar J. Dennis was charged with one count of defiant trespassing after she entered a restricted area adjacent to both the tiger and bear enclosures at Cohanzick Zoo on Aug. 18.

The investigation began on Aug. 20 after city department recreation officials notified police upon receiving video from other zoo visitors who witnessed the incident.

Video and photos show the woman jumping over a fence and approaching the caged enclosure of the Bengal tiger before reaching into the cage and quickly pulling her hand out when the animal reacted aggressively.

Chief of Police Michael Gaimari said another video shows the woman at the bear enclosure attempting the same thing.

The zoo lists the tiger as one of two Bengals born in 2016. A zoo in North Carolina donated Rishi and Mahesha to the Cohanzick Zoo in January 2017.

Dennis is scheduled to appear in Bridgeton Municipal Court at a later date.

Death of woman on first day of Burning Man under investigation https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/26/burning-man-woman-dies/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 21:06:24 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10271601 GERLACH, Nev. — The death of a woman on the first day of the Burning Man Festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert is under investigation.

On Sunday at 11:29 a.m., emergency services responded to a report of an unresponsive individual, festival officials said in a news release. “Life-saving measures were immediately attempted but were unsuccessful,” according to officials.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office reported it was notified at around 11:37 a.m. of the potential death of a participant.

“Deputies responded to the address provided and confirmed the death of a female participant,” officials stated.

The sheriff’s department identified 39-year-old Kendra Frazer as the woman who died. Her cause and manner of death are still pending the results of an autopsy and toxicology screening.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this loss,” the Burning Man Project said.

Support is available to festival participants including peer support services at Black Rock Rangers headquarters and outposts, according to the event.

“The safety and well-being of our staff and community are paramount,” organizers said. “We are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate this incident. The Pershing County Sheriff’s office investigates all deaths that occur in its jurisdiction.”

A 32-year-old festival-goer died in 2023 after he was found unresponsive on festival grounds.

Burning Man is an annual gathering that attracts nearly 80,000 artists, influencers, and other cultural elites for a mix of wilderness camping, communal expression and avant-garde performances.

During an interview on “Good Morning America,” he said he wants to “bring some of that gymnastics, maybe a backflip or handstand. I want to have fun with it.”

He became a viral star thanks to memes of his pre-competition preparation — no, he was not asleep — and his Superman-like transformation before hitting the floor (he takes off his glasses, just like Clark Kent).

Joshua Zimmerman, 30, barricaded himself Tuesday night near a West Side restaurant in the 2300 block of West Madison, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office announced during a news conference.

U.S. Marshals and the Chicago SWAT team surrounded the building, and after more than 12 hours, Zimmerman was taken into custody around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Chief Deputy Justin Smith said Zimmerman escaped from a courthouse in northwest Mississippi on June 14, and it’s not clear how he traveled to Chicago.

“During the escape, Zimmerman was being held on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. Furthermore, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office was awaiting to extradite Zimmerman back to Houston for the charge of murder,” according to a release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

He was wanted for murder, escape and armed robbery.

Salmonella outbreak from cucumbers results in 449 illnesses, CDC reports https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/16/salmonella-outbreak-from-cucumbers-results-in-449-illnesses-cdc-reports/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 20:00:31 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10246402 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a new update on a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers.

As of Aug. 14, 449 illnesses have been recorded across 31 states and the District of Columbia. No deaths have been reported, but 125 people have been hospitalized.

The FDA and CDC, along with state and local officials, investigated a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Africana and Salmonella Braenderup this summer, initially reported as two separate outbreaks.

However, due to the similarity of the outbreaks, the investigations were combined.

According to the CDC, reports of illness tied to the outbreak began between March 11 and June 4.

“Epidemiologic, traceback, and laboratory data show that cucumbers were contaminated with Salmonella and made people sick. Testing identified the Salmonella Braenderup strain in untreated canal water used by a grower in Florida,” the agency stated. “An additional grower has been identified as a likely source of illnesses in this outbreak; however, there aren’t any products on the market and likely no ongoing risk to the public.”

Symptoms of salmonella include bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that lasts more than three days, a fever over 102 degrees, excessive vomiting, signs of dehydration, and stomach cramps.

Body of woman recovered from Grand Canyon is third death in a week https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/09/body-of-woman-recovered-from-grand-canyon-is-third-death-in-a-week/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 21:30:39 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10218496 The body of a 20-year-old New Mexico woman was found at the Grand Canyon Tuesday, marking the third person to be found dead in the last week.

Leticia A. Castillo, 20, of Albuquerque was found below Twin Overlooks along Desert View Drive following a multi-day search, according to the National Park Service.

Investigators believe she entered the Grand Canyon on or around Saturday, Aug. 3.

Park rangers said her body was taken to the rim and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The National Park Service and the medical examiner are investigating. Additional information was not available.

“Since July 31, the Grand Canyon Search and Rescue team has handled three technical rescue recoveries,” NPS wrote in a statement. “Despite facing inclement weather and hazardous terrain, the team has undertaken significant risks to complete these missions.”

Abel Joseph Mejia, 20, from Hickory, N.C., died in a 400-foot fall from the rim about a quarter of a mile west of Pipe Creek Overlook on Wednesday, July 31.

“Mr. Mejia was near the edge of the rim when he suffered an accidental fall,” NPS noted.

Turning Point Pentecostal Church said Meija was on a mission trip when he died.

An unidentified man died Thursday, Aug. 1 after attempting an illegal BASE jump with a parachute at Yavapai Point on the canyon’s South Rim.

Costco to crack down on membership sharing with card scanners https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/08/costco-to-crack-down-on-membership-sharing-with-card-scanners/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 20:30:32 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10214051 Costco announced it would begin implementing stricter policies to crack down on non-members entering the store and trying to use other people’s cards.

Membership scanning devices will be introduced to shoppers entering the store over the next few months.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” Costco said in a statement. “Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.”

If members come into the store without a photo on their card, they must present valid photo identification. Shoppers are encouraged to visit the membership counter to have a photo taken.

Guests must also be accompanied by a valid cardholder to enter the store.

The crackdown comes after the store announced it was raising its membership fees for the first time since 2017.

The new fees, set to take effect Sept. 1, will boost the price of Costco’s basic Gold Star membership from $60 to $65 annually, while the cost for the premium Executive membership will rise from by $120 to $130.

In April, Costco also enforced membership status for anyone wanting to enjoy one of the $1.50 hotdog meals in the food court.

EPA issues emergency order to stop use of weedkiller, citing risks to unborn babies https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/07/epa-issues-emergency-order-to-stop-use-of-weedkiller-citing-risks-to-unborn-babies/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 01:00:06 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10211445 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued an emergency suspension of the common weedkiller known as DCPA, or Dacthal, citing “serious risks” to unborn babies.

It is the first time in nearly 40 years the EPA has taken this type of emergency action, according to a news release.

Dacthal is a pesticide used to control weeds in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, but it is mainly used on broccoli crops, Brussel sprouts, cabbage and onions.

The EPA said they took this action because when pregnant mothers are exposed to the chemical, it could change the fetal thyroid hormone levels which can have lasting consequences including low birth weight, impaired brain development, decreased IQ and impaired motor skills later in life.

The emergency order is effective immediately.

“It’s EPA’s job to protect people from exposure to dangerous chemicals. In this case, pregnant women who may never even know they were exposed could give birth to babies that experience irreversible lifelong health problems,”Michal Freedhoff, assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention said.

In 2013, the EPA requested data on the weedkiller and its manufacturer, requiring a comprehensive study on the effects of DCPA on thyroid development and function.

The most recent review of DCPA is part of a reevaluation required every 15 years to make sure the pesticide has no unreasonable adverse effects on human health or the environment.
