The full text of President Biden’s letter to the nation:

Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

July 21, 2024

My Fellow Americans,

Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation.

Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans. We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. American has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.

I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve protected and preserved our Democracy. And we’ve revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.

For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all who have worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.

I believe today what I always have: that there is noting America can’t do — when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.

Joe Biden

Concert Week: What it is, who’s participating and how to take part https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/05/07/concert-week-what-it-is-whos-participating-and-how-to-take-part/ Tue, 07 May 2024 20:39:01 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=9978999&preview=true&preview_id=9978999 If you think concert ticket prices are too high, this is the week for you. Concert Week, a Live Nation ticket sale, runs May 8-14 and offers $25 tickets to thousands of shows across the U.S. and Canada, plus for the first time in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Here’s everything you need to know about Concert Week 2024.

What is Concert Week?

Concert Week is a promotion in which select shows are available for $25. The world’s biggest concert promoter, Live Nation/Ticketmaster, created Concert Week 10 years ago, and the event has grown to include more than 5,000 shows around the world.

When is Concert Week 2024?

Concert Week runs from May 8-14. T-Mobile and Rakuten customers are given early access starting May 7.

Fans will want to act soon, as many shows will run out of $25 tickets quickly.

Which artists are participating in Concert Week?

Dozens of artists will have concerts on sale via Concert Week, though exact shows vary based on location.

Some of the bigger artists participating include: Alanis Morissette, Blink-182, Brooks & Dunn, Cage the Elephant, Chicago with Earth, Wind & Fire, Dierks Bentley, The Doobie Brothers, Hootie & the Blowfish, Iron Maiden, Janet Jackson, John Fogerty, Kings of Leon, Luke Bryan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top, Maroon 5, Meghan Trainor, Missy Elliott, New Kids on the Block, P!nk, Pitbull, Rob Zombie with Alice Cooper, Santana with the Counting Crows, the Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Styx and Foreigner, Tim McGraw and Train with REO Speedwagon.

For a full list, visit this site. Once the sale begins, fans will be able to sort available shows by region, event, venue or artist.

Are the tickets really only $25?

Yes, the tickets are $25, far less than most concert tickets of this caliber. The $25 ticket prices include all service fees, though taxes are not included. Taxes could include city, state or venue fees.

Is it only for concerts?

Concert Week includes shows that are not musical acts. Comedians like Dane Cook and Whitney Cummings will have $25 tickets, as well as the TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Oscars 2024 red carpet: See what the stars wore https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/03/10/oscars-2024-red-carpet-see-what-the-stars-wore/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 20:10:17 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=9682841&preview=true&preview_id=9682841 The Oscars 2024 red carpet is underway, and the stars are already dazzling at the 96th annual Academy Awards.

The show starts at 4 p.m. — an hour earlier than usual — on ABC with late-night TV funnyman Jimmy Kimmel returning for a fourth time as host. “Oppenheimer” leads the pack of nominees with 13 nods, including Best Picture. The top award seems pretty much a lock for Christopher Nolan’s three-hour epic.

In fact, there seems to be little suspense in several categories tonight, save for Best Actress. Frontrunners Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone turned in universally acclaimed performances in “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” respectively. Both triumphed at the Golden Globes when they were nominated in separate categories for comedy and drama. First-time nominee Gladstone seems to have a slight edge, having triumphed at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. If she wins, she’ll become the first Native American recipient of an acting award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Where would you live if you won the lottery? https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/02/16/where-would-you-live-if-you-won-the-lottery/ Fri, 16 Feb 2024 20:18:33 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=9611739&preview=true&preview_id=9611739 Where would you live if you won the lottery? Turns out Connecticut is a popular choice, according to Lottery ‘n Go.

A survey conducted with 3,000 participants posed the following question: If you won a lottery, what kind of property would you invest in?

Turns out, more than a couple destinations in the Nutmeg state made the list. Beachfront homes in Fairfield County landed 23rd, with real estate offerings bringing a blend of coastal living and upscale amenities. The direct access to Long Island shores is a great plus, too. Greenwich made the list as well at 40th, unsurprisingly. Its spread of luxurious homes “often feature private beaches, docks, and stunning views of the water,” according to the release. Country estates in Litchfield County and historic mansions in Hartford came in at 47th and 76th, respectively.

Curious about the top ten places lottery-winners would go to live? Here is the top 10:

1. Hawaiian Haven: Resort-Style Villas in Hawaii.

Topping the list is the Big Island of Hawaii, where winners would purchase resort-style villas within the confines of elite communities such as Hualalai and Mauna Kea. These lavish dwellings boast amenities fit for royalty, including access to premier golf courses, private pools, and mesmerizing vistas of the ocean or the island’s distinct volcanic topography.

2. Urban Oasis: Penthouses in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Hawaii makes another appearance with its capital city’s penthouses ranking second. Honolulu offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle with high-rise luxury penthouses that feature sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Diamond Head, and the bustling cityscape, accompanied by the finest modern amenities.

3. Coastal Elegance: Beachfront Homes in Malibu, California.

Third place goes to the quintessential beachfront homes of Malibu, renowned for their breathtaking sea views, direct beach access, and opulent facilities, including expansive terraces and state-of-the-art designs.

4. Timeless Beauty: Historic Homes in Coral Gables, Florida.

Coral Gables is celebrated for its impeccably maintained historic homes, many of which display the intricate designs of Mediterranean Revival architecture, complete with verdant gardens and exquisite interiors.

5. Seaside Serenity: Oceanfront Estates on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The most popular choice outside the usual triumvirate of states is Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Here, luxury means oceanfront estates with private beaches, golfing, and picturesque views of the Atlantic.

6. Island Luxury: Waterfront Estates in the Florida Keys.

The allure of the Florida Keys is undeniable for the affluent, with its relaxed yet luxurious waterfront estates that come with their own docks and stunning vistas of the open water.

7. Lakeside Grandeur: Mansions on Tennessee’s Lakeshores.

Tennessee’s beautiful lakes, such as Percy Priest Lake and Old Hickory Lake, are coveted for their grand lakefront mansions offering private docks and panoramic water views.

8. Southern Charm: Beachfront Homes on St. Simons, Georgia.

Georgia’s St. Simons Island ranks eighth, with its luxurious beachfront properties that provide direct access to sandy shores and beautiful ocean views, embodying a tranquil coastal life.

9. Historic Splendor: Homes in Asheville, North Carolina.

Asheville is known for its array of historic homes, especially in areas like Biltmore Forest, featuring stately architecture, expansive grounds, and proximity to landmarks such as the Biltmore Estate.

10. Mountain Retreat: Lakefront Estates in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Completing the top ten are the luxury lakefront estates in Lake Tahoe, situated at the Nevada-California border, offering private lake access and sprawling outdoor areas set against a peaceful mountain backdrop.

Everything you need to know about Sunday’s Super Bowl https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/02/08/everything-you-need-to-know-about-super-bowl-2024/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 13:00:45 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=9597061&preview=true&preview_id=9597061 Few things unite the country quite like the Super Bowl. Every year, around 100 million Americans tune in to see which NFL team lifts the Lombardi Trophy, an event as much about the football on the field as the spectacle that surrounds it. Super Bowl LVIII, set to kick off in Las Vegas on Sunday, will be no different. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s game.

Who’s playing in the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl LVIII will pit the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers

It is a rematch of the 2020 Super Bowl, which Kansas City won 31-20. Led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and increasingly popular tight end Travis Kelce, KC will be playing in its fourth Super Bowl in five seasons. On the other side, quarterback Brock Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, will try to help the 49ers win their first Super Bowl since 1995, when current SF head coach Kyle Shanahan’s father, Mike, was the team’s offensive coordinator.

Super Bowl preview: 49ers to face Chiefs in Las Vegas for super rematch

What time does the Super Bowl kick off?

Super Bowl LVIII is slated to kick off Sunday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. EST from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The venue seats 65,000 and opened in 2020.

What channel is the Super Bowl on?

If you’re in control of the remote on Sunday, you’ll want to find your local CBS station for the primary Super Bowl broadcast. But there are other options: Nickelodeon will air a family-friendly version of the game while streamers can watch on Paramount+.

  • What: Super Bowl LVIII
  • Who: Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers
  • Where: Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas
  • When: 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 11
  • TV: CBS, Nickelodeon
  • Streaming: Paramount+

Will Taylor Swift be at the Super Bowl?

Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs (L) celebrates with Taylor Swift after defeating the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game at M&T Bank Stadium on January 28, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)Taylor Swift, the mega-popular artist who just won a Grammy for Album of the Year, has been spotted at many of Kansas City’s games this season, especially in the playoffs, having started a romance with Kelce. Her attendance at the Super Bowl, however, is complicated by the fact she’s performing a show half a world away in Tokyo the night before.

According to the Japan embassy in the U.S., Swift can make the 12-hour flight across the Pacific Ocean to Las Vegas just in time for the game to begin. Though she has not yet confirmed her attendance, at this point it would be surprising if she missed the biggest party of the year. And who knows, she might even end up at Disneyland, too.

Who is performing in the Super Bowl halftime show?

When the football players go into the locker room for a halftime break, a whole different type of entertainment on the field begins. This year, Usher headlines the Super Bowl halftime show, but he’s hardly the only big-name artist performing in Las Vegas

Country music legend Reba McEntire will sing the national anthem, while Post Malone and Andra Day will also perform before the game. During the game itself, Tiësto was scheduled to become the NFL’s first-ever in-game Super Bowl DJ. However, the Dutch DJ announced he had to pull out because of a “personal family emergency.” Kaskade will replace Tiësto as the in-game DJ.

What about the commercials?

If football and music don’t do it for you, chances are you’ll still want to watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. As the most-watched event of the year — a record 115.1 million viewers watched in 2023 — advertisers spend millions of dollars for a mere 30-second spot during the big game.

This year, you can expect to see “Wednesday” actor Jenna Ortega promote Doritos, World Cup winner Lionel Messi sell Michelob Ultra and Bud Light attempt to regain its title as America’s most popular beer, plus many more ads featuring stars such as Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Tina Fey, Glenn Close, Kate McKinnon, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, David Beckham and Jason Sudeikis.

So is $7 million for 30 seconds of ad time worth it? It depends who you ask.

What should I cook for my Super Bowl party?

Don’t think we forgot about the nachos. No Super Bowl is complete without an overabundance of food and drink.

If you’re short on inspiration, here’s a quick rundown of how to throw the perfect Super Bowl party, including recipes for mozzarella arancini, kielbasa puff pastries and cocktails

If you’re looking for something a bit lighter, these healthier items will be welcome at any big game potluck

Can I bet on the Super Bowl?

Seeing as this year’s Super Bowl is the first in Sin City, (well, technically it’s in Paradise, Nevada, adjacent to Las Vegas), there will be plenty of gambling going on around the big game — just not from the players participating. The NFL has said all gambling, including sportsbooks and casino games, is off limits for players, coaches and team personnel for the 49ers and Chiefs

Fans who live in the 37 states where sports betting is legal, which doesn’t include California, have favored the Chiefs so far, despite Kansas City’s underdog status.
