Timothy J. Carpenter, of Indiana, had hundreds of images and dozens of videos of children being exploited, including some recorded in a shower.

The sentencing comes after Indiana State Police were made aware of Carpenter in 2022. Police learned that Carpenter used software to receive and distribute child sexual abuse material on the internet through his cellphone.

Carpenter admitted to police investigators that he used his phone to access the material. When police investigators examined his phone, they found multiple videos depicting a prepubescent child fully nude in a shower.

Carpenter was seen in videos concealing a camera in multiple locations near the shower to capture video of the child’s genitals.

The child predator was sentenced to over 17 years in prison for possessing and creating images of child sexual abuse.

A judge also ordered Carpenter to register as a sex offender where he resides, where he is an employee and where he is a student.

FBI seeks victims of ex-park ranger accused of extortion and sexual assault https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/09/05/fbi-seeks-victims-of-ex-park-ranger-accused-of-extortion-and-sexual-assault/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 20:00:08 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10441551 The FBI is looking for potential victims after announcing that a former park ranger targeted individuals in exchange for money or sex.

Joey Lamar Ellis is believed to have abused his position as a park ranger at Cullen, Memorial and Cleveland parks in Houston.

FBI investigators charged the 33-year-old with several felonies for luring and robbing men at various parks, according to a post on the agency’s social media account.

Ellis worked for the city of Houston when he allegedly made victims believe he was a law enforcement officer. Federal officials said he forced victims to pay money or sexually assaulted them in exchange for allowing them to leave the park.

According to Ellis’ employment records, he began working as a park ranger in 2019. Investigators believe there could be victims from 2019 to the present. Potential victims are asked to come forward and contact the FBI.

Officials noted that members of the LGBTQIA+ community may have been targeted by Ellis.

Victims can fill out a form on the FBI’s website. They may be eligible for services and rights under federal or state law.

Ellis was charged with felony official oppression by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.

FBI arrests ex-police officer accused of staging suicide in murder case https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/28/fbi-arrests-ex-police-officer-accused-of-staging-suicide-in-murder-case/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 18:30:14 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10274809 CANTON, Mass. — A former detective accused of killing a pregnant Massachusetts woman in 2021 was arrested Wednesday.

FBI officials in Boston said Matthew Farwell was arrested for allegedly killing Sandra Birchmore.

Farwell worked for the Stoughton Police Department when 23-year-old Birchmore was found dead in her apartment.

A 2022 internal investigation found that three officers on the Stoughton police force engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with Birchmore.

Matthew Farwell was named as one of the involved officers, along with William Farwell and Richard Devine.

Farwell is also accused of staging Birchmore’s apartment to make it appear she had committed suicide.

Federal prosecutors allege that Farwell and Birchmore had a sexual relationship since Birchmore was a teenager. Prosecutors believe Farwell killed the young woman to prevent her from revealing their relationship.

Birchmore’s death was ruled a suicide, but a pathologist hired by Birchmore’s parents ruled her death a homicide.

According to a federal indictment filed Tuesday, Farwell strangled Birchmore to death.

Farwell was taken into custody without incident, according to the FBI.

Memphis man charged with threatening to kill Biden, Harris, Obama https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/23/memphis-man-charged-with-threatening-to-kill-biden-harris-obama/ Sat, 24 Aug 2024 00:30:30 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10268969 A Memphis man is charged with making death threats against President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama, according to the Department of Justice.

Kyl Alton Hall, a 37-year-old man from Tennessee, is accused of making numerous threats on X against prominent Democrats.

Federal prosecutors allege that Hall threatened to kill, assassinate, shoot and crash the plane of Biden, and to assassinate Harris and Obama.

Hall was indicted on Tuesday after allegedly making the threats in July.

He faces two counts of threats against a sitting president and vice president and one count of a threat against a former president.

If convicted, Hall could face up to 15 years in prison.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service.

FBI Director Christopher Wray and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland have warned of an increase in threats as the election approaches.

“We expect that these threats will continue and that these cases will not be the last,” Garland said earlier this month after a Pakistani man was charged in a plot to carry out political assassinations on U.S. soil.

On Thursday, a man accused of threatening to kill Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump was taken into custody in Arizona after an hourslong manhunt.

National park officials urge caution after lightning injuries at popular viewpoint https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/16/national-park-officials-urge-caution-after-lightning-injuries-at-popular-viewpoint/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 17:00:21 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10246229 A dramatic lightning strike at a national park left two visitors injured.

The women were airlifted to a Utah hospital on Monday for injuries sustained during their visit to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, according to the National Park Service.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is located on the Utah-Arizona state border.

Both women — ages 22 and 23 — were struck by lightning just before 4 p.m. while standing at a popular viewpoint known as Horseshoe Bend, along the Colorado River.

Officials said the women — one from the Netherlands and the other from Australia — were treated at St. George Regional Hospital.

The lightning storm occurred during a time when the area receives heavy rain, referred to as monsoon season.

Park officials urged visitors to exercise caution when exploring outdoor areas, particularly from mid-June to September in Arizona and from July to September in Utah.

Thunderstorms, which are frequent and often severe during this period, pose a significant risk, officials said in a news release.

“Visitors are advised to seek shelter in a vehicle or building immediately upon hearing thunder to avoid lightning strikes,” officials cautioned.

DEA makes record-breaking seizure of crystal meth in Atlanta https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/15/dea-makes-record-breaking-seizure-of-crystal-meth-in-atlanta/ Fri, 16 Aug 2024 00:00:37 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10242459 A record-breaking seizure of crystal methamphetamine was made last week.

Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration seized 2,585 pounds of the illegal drug on Aug. 8.

More than a ton of meth valued at $3.2 million was discovered at a farmers market in Atlanta.

Federal officials said Jesus Martinez, the driver of the truck, was arrested in connection with the alleged drug-smuggling case.

The meth was found hidden inside boxes of celery.

“This was contained in a cover load of celery,” said DEA Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Robert Murphy. “It was hiding in the celery. Obviously, we threw away the celery. That didn’t make it to the store.”

The Georgia Department of Agriculture posted on social media that “criminal activity in our Ag industry will not be tolerated” following the bust.

Martinez was a member of a Mexican cartel, according to the DEA Atlanta.

The crystal methamphetamine made its way into the U.S. at the southern border.

The origin of the record seizure is unknown at this time.

“This is a significant and unbelievable amount of drugs to be shipped at one time and to a destination this far from the border,” said Robert J. Murphy, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Division. “It also shows the confidence of the cartel behind this. It’s the largest-ever seizure of meth made by the DEA in Atlanta and the third largest nationwide in 2024.”

The drug agency noted that its top operational priority is to defeat the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels, the two drug cartels responsible for the vast majority of the fentanyl and methamphetamine killing Americans.

Officials to outline safety plans for Democratic National Convention ahead of next week https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/08/13/officials-to-outline-safety-plans-for-democratic-national-convention-ahead-of-next-week/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 19:00:45 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=10234201 Democrats will be in Chicago next week to officially select Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz to be their party’s nominees.

Over the course of four days, Democrats will highlight their vision for the next four years.

Local and federal officials are expected to share with the public what safety measures are in place for next week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

The news conference on Tuesday will include what preparations, like fencing and road closures, are already in place.

A security perimeter will go up on Tuesday at the United Center arena and McCormick Place Convention Center, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications confirmed to WGN that there will be intermittent traffic impacts such as rolling road closure so that construction to secure the area can begin on Tuesday.

There will be two zones in the secured perimeter: one for credentialed personnel and the other for the public. The area open to the public is subject to security checks.

Later on this week, more additional closures are planned for pedestrians and vehicles.

Law enforcement officers from around Illinois and federal agencies will be assisting Chicago police before and during the DNC — similar to the way the Republican National Convention bolstered its security.

A judge is expected to rule on Tuesday on where demonstrators can be during the convention.

Milwaukee hosted last month’s Republican National Convention and the pandemic-altered 2020 Democratic National Convention.
